Vadodara, November 19: Vadodara witnessed five deaths in three days, all involving buses of the Gujarat State Road Transport Corporation (GSRTC). Statistics revealed by the GSRTC Vadodara division reveals a more shocking picture. In seven months, there has been 39 accidents — 11 fatal, 28 major ones.GSRTC chief traffic manager blames bus drivers for negligent driving. Reckless driving is the reason behind accidents at Padra and Nava Yard. Our investigation reveals that these accidents occurred due to negligence of the drivers, says GSRTC General Manager Mukesh Megha, adding, An FIR has been lodged against bus driver Mahesh Makwana in connection with the Padra bus accident that took place on Wednesday. While GSRTC claims that its buses are in perfect order and the drivers are to be blamed, officials at the Road Transport Office (RTO) have something different to say. Vehicle inspecting officer (RTO, Vadodara) B S Trivedi says when the buses are brought for inspection, they are in working condition. ‘‘What happens later is not known. When we check the same vehicle after three days, certain machine parts seem to have been replaced,’’ says Trivedi. But, the unions do not buy this explanation. ‘‘We submitted a charter of demands to the GSRTC Managing Director and the State Government this month. It includes demands for 1,000 new buses and appointment of more maintenance staff,’’ says Chetankumar Desai, head of Gujarat ST Mazdoor Mahasangh at Vadodara. No mechanic has been recruited by the GSRTC since 1982. The average age of GSRTC’s maintenance staff is over 50 years....
