KSRTC unearths insurance fraud

Complaints of insurance fraud running into several lakhs of rupees allegedly carried out by doctors, advocates and a police officer in collusion with "accident victims" have been filed by the Karnataka State Road Transport Corporation (KSRTC) at Ulsoor Gate police station. The complaints are the result of enquiries carried out by the KSRTC's security and vigilance unit.

If the complaints prove true, what emerges would be a sordid tale of need and greed. The corporation claims to have uncovered a racket in which poor and working class people, lured by promises of easy money, play into the hands of unscrupulous advocates who then "arrange" false police complaints and fabricated medical certificates. The occupations of the complainants speak their own story: tailor, painter, carpenter, die-maker, vegetable seller, machine operator, and so on.

KSRTC has already filed three cases against claims made on accidents that involved their vehicles. In one such case (FIR No. 0091), the corporation claims that the eight persons who sought a total compensation of Rs. 27.75 lakh for their injuries in the accident (of August 8, 2003) had given false.....Read more at source

KSRTC bus mows down cyclist

A security guard was killed on the spot when a KSRTC bus ran over him in Bellary district on Monday morning.

The accident occurred when the over-speeding bus hit the bicycle near S P Circle. The deceased is identified as K.Devendrappa (35), a resident of Devinagar, Bellary.

Devendrappa was working as a security guard with a private firm in the city and was on the way home when the incident occurred, police said. Bellary city police have registered the case and seized the vehicle.

KSRTC Bus collided against a lorry

Two persons were killed and nine others were injured on Friday morning when a Tirupati-bound KSRTC (Volvo) bus coming from Kolhapur collided against a lorry at the Kuntegowdanahalli Gate near Kallambella between 5:30 am and 6 am.

Both the victims hail from Bangalore and have been identified as Shyamprasad (35), who died on the spot while one Krishnaprasad Mani (35) died at the Tumkur Government Hospital.

It is believed that the KSRTC bus driver lost control over the vehicle before ramming into a lorry from behind.

KSRTC Bus fell into the Almatti main canal

In one of the worst accidents of its kind, a KSRTC bus from Hubli to Chittapur fell into the Almatti main canal at Nidagundi, 60 km. from Bijapur on January 10. A preliminary inquiry by the KSRTC and another at the instance of the State Government by the Principal Transport Secretary, B.L. Sridhar, blamed the conductor for the accident. Eyewitnesses said the accident occurred when the conductor took over from the driver near a turning adjacent to the main canal. Inquiries revealed that the accident rate is high among private buses hired by the KSRTC and its subsidiaries.The number of private buses in the North-West Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NWKRTC) and the North-East Karnataka Road Transport Corporation (NEKRTC) is about 40 per cent of the fleet strength.

KSRTC bus hits a motor cycle

A 28-year-old woman was killed and 31 persons were injured in three separate road accidents in the district today. Smitha Franklin was killed when the motorcycle on which she was riding pillion was hit by a KSRTC bus near Malayam in the Malayinkil police station limits at 2-45 p.m. today. Her husband, Franklin Das, a priest, was injured in the accident, while their four-year-old son, Ansmitha, escaped unhurt. Ms. Franklin died while being rushed to the Medical College Hospital here. The family was proceeding to Malayam from the Plavila Prayer House, Vattappara, when the accident occurred. The KSRTC bus was proceeding to Pappanamcode from Malayinkil. The police said the accident occurred when the KSRTC bus tried to avoid a hump on the road.
